Qualifications:

Education / Licensure/ Professional Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in English Translation/ Literature from an accredited university (Essential).

Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as Interpreter (Desirable).

Minimum of one (1) year experience in healthcare facility / hospital setting (Desirable).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of spoken and written English language and a basic understanding of medical terminology specific to human anatomy, medical diagnosis, treatments and procedures.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required in translating information, using terminology appropriate to the patient’s age and comprehension ability. Promotes optimal patient knowledge and understanding of health care regimes.

Demonstrates the skills required in evaluating the patient’s comprehension of information provided. Seeks clarification of information prior to translation if required. Identifies indicators of patient or visitor dissatisfaction or misunderstanding.

Acts as a unit receptionist as required.  Interacts calmly and cordially in addressing the needs of Arabic speakers. Supports hospital regulations related to visiting hours, visitor control, non-smoking and other safety issues; reinforces hospital regulations to patients and visitors in an objective manner.

Provides translation and interpretation in conjunction with English speaking Health Care Providers. Acts as a resource to Care Providers for cultural issues

Maintains availability to accompany Health Care staff. Obtains all requested history and information, and translates information accurately and completely. Provides accurate translation of treatment, examinations, surgery and other procedures.

Acts as a patient advocate during interpretation. Refers specific questions, information and patient needs to the Health Care Team. Provides reassurance and psychological support to the patient as appropriate.

Documentation is complete, accurate and legible, including the consent forms. Patient records are reviewed for deficiencies as per unit protocols.

Provides orientation to the hospital processes in conjunction with the RN.  Works with the multidisciplinary Health Care Team in providing orientation and individual patient teaching.

Maintains awareness of the stress of hospitalization and the disease process on the patient’s learning ability. Evaluates the patient’s understanding of teaching and instructions, repeats and reinforces as necessary.

Performs all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner.

Performs all other related duties as required or assigned.
