Nursing Shift Manager

Riyadh

Coordinates and supervises the activities of all Nursing Units / Emergency Room, outside normal hospital working hours; acts as relief Nursing Unit Manager, as assigned; monitors the standards and delivery of patient care throughout all Nursing Units on a shift basis; ensures adherence to KKESH standards, national and international accreditation agency requirements, policies, procedures and standards of care; responds to and refers all administrative issues through appropriate channels for all departments, outside normal working hours . Education/ Professional Experience/ Licensure:Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing in country of professional practice (Diploma from Western and similar countries, otherwise Bachelor’s Degree) with Minimum of eight (8) years working experience in acute care setting, four (4) years of which was spent in a managerial position. Pediatric / Recovery Room / Operating Room experience required if covering these areas in the absence of the Nursing Unit Manager (Essential).Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing with Minimum of six (6) years working experience in acute care setting, two (2) years of which was spent in a Managerial position. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Actively engaged in Nursing Services’ strategic and operational planning, identifies immediate and long-range objectives and strategies, and develops operational plans and strategies for implementation of Nursing Services-wide programs.  2.Makes recommendations to Nursing Unit Managers and Nursing Administration on staffing levels and capital equipment purchasing during preparation of the hospital budget. 3.Supports development of unit-based budgets within the Department of Nursing. Exercises sound judgment with regard to expenses when making decisions on behalf of Nursing Unit Managers. 4.Supports the employment, training and development of Saudi nationals. 5.Acts as Nursing Unit Manager as assigned. 6.Coordinates and supervises the activities of all nursing units outside of normal hospital working hours; receives and gives report on the status of seriously ill patients, patient care activities, staffing and administrative issues. 7.Evaluates patient care needs, staffing requirements, skills mix, Operating Room schedule and staffing resources; identifies possible patient and / or public relations / administrative problems; sets priorities for resource allocation; ensures sufficient staffing levels for safe patient care; continuously monitors staffing allocation and changing patient needs. 8.Evaluates clinical issues and potential problems according to need for immediate intervention / resolution and implements appropriate action; coordinates admission / transfer of patients according to requirements. 9.Acts as an administrative resource to all hospital staff during the shift. Collaborates with the Administrator On-Call regarding administrative issues requiring immediate solution, or with potential public relations issues.  Acts as a liaison between Nursing Personnel, Medical Staff, Administration and other departments. 10.Demonstrates an understanding of hospital policies and procedures; interprets hospital policies and procedures to staff, patients and families. 11.Supports orientation of all levels of staff; assists / supports the competency assessment program; provides feedback on staff performance. 12.Reports on staff performance and patient care issues to Nursing Unit Managers; communicates significant issues, areas of concern and action taken to the Director of Surgical Services / Director of Nursing Services / Associate Chief Nursing Officer. 13.Demonstrates equity and fairness in managing staff issues; implements corrective action in a fair and consistent manner if required and provides documentation to Nursing Unit Managers. 14.Demonstrates effective priority setting, time management and decision making skills in the management of staff and resources; assesses staffing schedules for nursing skills mix and competency levels, makes provisional plans for anticipated deficiencies in staffing and skills mix on a shift basis. 15.Monitors awareness of framework for care delivery and engages implementation of that framework at clinical and administrative levels, promoting evidence based / best practices where possible. 16.Demonstrates current clinical knowledge and skills; acts as a resource for all levels of staff and the health care team; uses a systematic process to resolve patient care and nursing concerns; investigates clinical practice issues and takes appropriate action. 17.Makes nursing / administrative rounds on all units regularly throughout the shift; interacts with the Charge Nurse in each area to ensure safe staffing levels, and oversight of patient care and administrative issues; provides support and advice on clinical issues; upon request, obtains medical records, supplies or equipment to support patient care. 18.Responds to Code Blue, Code F and Disaster calls in all hospital areas; acts as the Senior Administrative and Nursing Leader until relieved; ensures all documentation is complete following resolution of a code; supports staff as needed following the code response. 19.Upholds the standards of the International Council of Nurses - Code of Ethics; those of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS); assists nurses to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas; seeks assistance from Senior Nursing Management, Administration, Social Services or Religious Awareness Team in dealing with complex ethical and cultural issues. 20.Participates in hospital-wide and nursing services performance improvement activities; applies quality management strategies within his / her role; initiates investigation into areas of concern and makes recommendations. 21.Ensures policies, procedures and systems are in compliance with national and international  standards and the hospital performance improvement plan; participates in accreditation  mock surveys; is a resource to Nursing Staff on accreditation processes. 22.Participates in nursing services research / data collection activities, makes suggestions for change to practice / systems based on evidence based research; encourages staff to continually update knowledge of current nursing research and practice. 23.Performs all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner 24.Performs all other duties as required or assigned.
